Welcome to Tipirneni-Sajja Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Lab

We are a team of multi-cultural, inspired biomedical engineers continuously striving to develop and investigate innovative quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (NMR) techniques for various translational and clinical applications. We pursue meritorious biomedical research at the intersection of multiple disciplines including life sciences, physics, engineering and technology to advance science and benefit healthcare.

MRISL is a place where we believe commitment, determination and hard work combined with mentorship and guidance are key drivers for success. We train motivated graduate and undergraduate students to pursue research in advancing MRI and NMR techniques. Our lab also offers summer internships to high school students to shadow our lab and get some hands-on experience in biomedical research. To find out about the opportunities, contact us

Research

Our lab research is directed towards an overarching goal of developing and validating quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy techniques for various translational and clinical applications. Our research is primarily divided into two areas – a) developing confounder-free magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods for accurate quantification of iron overload and steatosis (fatty liver) non-invasively for replacing tissue biopsy, and b) developing automated techniques for quantifying metabolites in biological tissue samples using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Our research group consistently publishes in leading peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy techniques. We also present at prestigious international conferences such as ISMRM and MANA, as well as national events like ENC, SPR, RSNA, and BMES, facilitating the exchange of ideas and fostering collaboration with experts across the globe.

People

Dr. Sajja, Principal Investigator of the lab, is a biomedical scientist focused on quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy for noninvasive disease biomarker identification and early diagnosis. She has secured NIH (Trailblazer Award) and NSF (CAREER Award) funding and has published 29 journal articles (over 1,600 citations), over 50 conference abstracts, and one book chapter. Our lab is comprised of highly talented and dedicated MS and PhD students who are passionate about advancing research in MRI and NMR domain. We warmly welcome medical students to explore summer research opportunities with us, and we encourage undergraduate students to join us in participating in enriching research experiences.
